A Glimpse of the Future by Mayank Manohar
A Glimpse of the Future by Mayank Manohar can free you from inhibitions. It sets you on the road to recovery making you confident of your choices. The story travels from the darker side of life to mixing some grey shades and finally seeing the light of hope. This post is not a spoiler but mirrors the pitiful state humans reach when they tackle their lives on their own.
In the current scenario, many of us face rejections, failures, and other emotions of denial that are hard to resist. Let’s see how the lives of Rehan, Arpita, Lavanya, and Namrata revolve around each other, affecting them emotionally, physically, and mentally.
This book is a sequel to Shadow of the Past. You can read its review and exclusive interview with the author – Mayank Manohar here.
Rehan the Protagonist
In both volumes, Rehan is a complex character. He is betrayed in love several times and suddenly gets lucky when he least expects it. But in between such turmoil in relationships, Rehan is drained emotionally. He can’t accept the circumstances. He realises that instead of being happy, something keeps holding him back from giving his all to the relationship.
The reader enters the dark stages of depression as Rehan falls into the pit. The author carefully mends boundaries when Rehan breaks them through physically torching himself, hallucinating his lady love, harming her mentally and physically etc.
The reader is also affected when Rehan loses interest in living and is alive on cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. In this pitiful situation, you want him to see the light of the day and feel restless to convey this to him. That’s when his manager, Anirudh, enters the story.
Friends are the enlightenment of life

The author promotes a friendly work environment when Rehan’s manager understands his state of mind and asks him to take leave and rest. After a few days, when he doesn’t receive any messages from Rehan, he reaches his home to check. At this point, Anirudh strictly tells Rehan to join a rehabilitation centre for the betterment of himself and everybody connected to him.
In today’s fast-paced lives, when work culture becomes stressful for employees, this book talks about taking care of its employee’s mental health. You need people to acknowledge you in times of loneliness.
Living away from his parents was favourable to Rehan when he was racing up his career growth but became a curse when he was defeated in love. The author didn’t want Rehan to trouble his parents so he kept them away. I felt the parents could have been a part of his recovery.
The road to recovery needs human intervention
The story ends on a positive note telling the readers that life is never simple but we make it one. Reaching a rehabilitation centre is not the end of depression. You need constant motivation to fight back your fears and look forward to living; a life with hopes and loving people. Unless someone holds your hand and brings you back to life, you don’t want to cross the tunnel and see a glimpse of the future.
A Glimpse of the Future by Mayank Manohar
Mayank has done an ample amount of research for his story and added many of his personal experiences too. This makes his story even more relatable and original. Mental health crisis does exist and it’s no shame to accept that you need medical help. Friends and family are requested to support and offer help in the initial stages itself.
