Old stories of raw mango pickles taking you back in time
I have seen raw mango as a major ingredient at home while growing up. It was a major competitor to main vegetables like potato and tomato. Being a south Indian, my grandmother lived solely on raw mangoes. She would prepare different kinds of pickles from raw mangoes daily to accompany curd rice and many other dishes. That’s why I feel nostalgic writing about raw mango pickles that take me back in time.
She would prepare fresh pickle that tasted tangy and sweet. Those pickles were a great combination for even north Indian paranthees. Many times when we would cribble about the menu, she would serve Rotis with her lip smacking raw mango pickles. Ah…while writing to you, I can sense the taste on my tongue. Such is the strong bonding that memories give us.
Today, mom makes them exactly the same as my grandma but the circumstances have changed and I wait to meet her before I relish them. The recipes are not hard to try and make yourself but that would not have the taste of my grandma. Nevertheless, I have got a few of the pickles in small jars to my home that will make me happy whenever I eat them.
