How can you make lettuce more interesting to eat?
It’s only after pregnancy that I started searching for healthy options for my lip-smacking fried foods. Looking slimmer was added to my priority list when soups and salads became my next best friends. But living in a traditional family where food is worshipped, you can’t diet or look for only salads to be your companion at dinner. That’s when I tried to make lettuce more interesting to eat.
When you run your own kitchen, you learn about so many new vegetables and fruits. You also leave a few dishes your mom used to make. It all depends on the choices of food the people eat in a house. This is when I was introduced to lettuce, the salad leaf as it is fondly known at my home.
Initially, it tasted almost like cabbage to me only that it’s softer and sweeter. We mix it in our desi salad of cucumber, tomato and radish with Indian spices. We like it and enjoy saying that today we have an English ingredient in our salad. Well, it was just a decorative leaf on our plates unless I researched about its nutritious benefits.
Nutritional benefits of lettuce
- The greener the lettuce leaf is, the more nutrient-dense it is.
- It helps to fight inflammation and diseases like cancer and diabetes.
- Lettuce leaf is low in fat and rich in water content that’s 95%. The fibre in the leaf keeps you full.
- Consuming lettuce helps in digestion treating bloating and constipation.
- The presence of Vitamin A and C helps in building immunity too.
Now that we know so many healthy things about lettuce, we must also try different ways to make it interesting to eat.
- Apart of eating lettuce in salads, I have tried mixing it in burgers and wraps when I make them at home.
- Some say that adding it to a smoothie after crushing the fruits gives it a nutritional flavour. Time to try this at home so that I share my take on the same.
- I feel I can try it in place of cabbage also because I like cabbage sandwiches and replacing it with lettuce might be a good option.
