Which summer cooler is your favourite to quench your thirst?
Summers are a great time to have cool parties at home itself with refreshing drinks from old house kitty. Going back around 30 years in time, I remember drinking Rasna every hour between our play breaks. I also learnt its recipe and it would be super fun to add all Rasna sachets to a big jug of water with more sugar to taste yummy. I liked all its flavour but Cola was my best because, at that time, I was not allowed to drink the original Coco-Cola. Do you remember any favourite summer cooler to quench your thirst back then?
Different summer coolers had different story behind
Coming ahead in time, I grew up enjoying Khus and Roohafza. I don’t remember drinking Roohafza as much as I liked watching its TV commercials. It was so frequent on Doordarshan that we ought to try it and drink it every summer. I liked Khus much more than Roohafza maybe its green colour attracted me more. But we would enjoy the hot and humid afternoons with these summer coolers to quench our thirst and have a small party feeling.
It was not important to call many of your friends to have a sharbat party at home. We were always 3, my grandma, my little brother and I. In fact, for 7 years, my sole company was my grandma only. I never bothered to have any friends. Maybe I liked being at home and was not very social back then. I am not social even now but with time and maturity, you learn to smile and try to have at least one good friend.
New relationships add new flavours in life
Well, after marriage, my new company was my father in law. When I am not out on coffee dates with my husband, I am partying at home with my in-laws. Here, a new variant added to our summer coolers list and that is Aam Panna. I like its chatpata taste with black salt and sugar. So now a mix of summer coolers are made in the evening at home that includes Rose Syrup (substitute of Roohafza), Khus, Aam Panna and even Chandan and Jalzeera. Oh my God, I can open a mocktail shop with so many varieties.
I also learnt to make natural Bel sharbat from the fruit itself from my mother in law. It refreshes you to the core in the hardest of summer time like June. I even drank Roohafza with black salt and lemon for the first time and liked it better than its sweet variant.
Being in a family, you keep on adding the things you learn and with new people, you alter them to suit your present taste buds.
Did you have any favuorite summer cooler from the above list?

Summers bring raw mango, so Aam Panha tops the list. Mango shake, Aamras is my favorite coolers. Lassi with roohafza and Nimbu paani are again some yum options. Rasna and its flavors are how we all grew up and now tang is my kid’s favorite.
Yes Tang has replaced Rasna in today’s generation. Thanks, Pragun.
Indian summer makes it necessary to have ‘coolers’ and you have some interesting ones here.
Thank you.
I used to love Roohafza wala doodh, not the sherbet. But roohafza was quite expensive when compared Rasna, so Rasna used to be had more. I remember trying almost all flavours and making ice lollies from the orange one.
Now I make Aam Panna at home, which every one relishes, but once in a while I really miss Rasna
Oh yes, I remember making ice lollies too from Rasna. It’s available online today also but maybe now that taste will not take me back in time. Also, I don’t want to make new memories with Rasna because I am happily relishing the old ones.
You made me thirst for all these coolers, Geethica! Though I am still to taste Bel Sharbat, Rose and Aam Panna I love it too.
Haha, time to make one for you! Thanks, Mayuri.
