Did you know that herbs have medicinal advantages too?
I came across the word herbs when I started eating pizzas at Pizza Hut. Looking at others, I learnt to put Oregano on my pizza slice that adds a different flavour making it tastier. Then, oregano, basil, herbs and spices were some of the add-ons I added to my pasta recipe. For a long time, herbs meant only these few names to me until I researched a little more about them and learnt that herbs have so many medicinal advantages to our lives.
Herbs and spices
The leafy part of the plants is called herb and any other part usually dried is known as spices. Some years back, I received a basil plant as a gift at an event which I fondly added to my balcony garden. On enquiring my gardener, I learnt that there are 2 different types of basil plants for ritual and eating purposes.

On that note, learning never stops just like you don’t stop ageing as long as you are alive. At a point in my life, I wanted to stop learning anything. But after enjoying a few years of my domestic life, I am here again eager to learn new and different things but this time they are of my choice!
Medicinal advantages of herbs
Well extending the learning process, let’s start with medicinal advantages of herbs:
- The most important medicinal use of herbs and spices is cancer-fighting. Apiaceous plants, worldwide distributed spices are rich in chemopreventive and therapeutic agents.
- Indian Ayurvedic medicine has used many herbs such as turmeric possibly as early as 1900 B.C
- Egyptians began to experiment with the herbal treatment of disease that included garlic, opium, castor oil, coriander, mint, indigo, and other herbs for medicine.

Why is homemade food the best?
Knowingly or unknowingly, we consume herbs daily in some form because we prepare them at home regularly. That’s why homemade food is always good for health as each and every ancestor has added an ingredient from his/her times depending upon its medicinal value to our body.

I am happy that I am using most of the herbs. Indian cooking includes so many herbs without being gungho about it.
